Jamal Murray was recognized by ESPN on Wednesday for his comeback from injury. The former Kentucky basketball standout won the ESPY for Comeback Player of the Year.
A torn ACL sidelined Murray for 18 months before he returned to the court for the Denver Nuggets 2022-23 season. Murray impressed in his return, averaging 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game. He turned it up a notch in the postseason with 26.1 points, 5.7 boards and 7.1 assists per game to help the Nuggets to their first-ever NBA Championship.
“I wanna thank my family, my friends, my coaches, the whole Denver Nuggets organization, all the fans for having belief in me from the start. But I want to give a big shout-out to my teammates for helping me get my confidence back,” Murray said accepting the award. “All season long, all rehab long, they supported me through the ups and downs with the rehab of the season, of the playoffs, which meant a lot for me to get here today.”
Murray had a sensational 2015-16 season at Kentucky, averaging 20.0 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game to earn All-American and All-SEC recognition. He was selected No. 7 overall by Denver in the 2016 NBA Draft.
