Mark Pope flips longtime BYU commit, elite prospect to Kentucky

Mark Pope is off to a great start on the recruiting trail in his first offseason as Kentucky’s head coach.

According to a report, 4-star recruit Collin Chandler has been released from his NLI to BYU and is set to follow Pope to Lexington. That’s per 247Sports’ Travis Branham.

Chandler was one of the nation’s top recruits in the class of 2022, but did not enroll coming out of high school as he went on a 2-year mission. Chandler will now make his collegiate debut with Kentucky in 2024.

Chandler was one of the nation’s best shooting guards in his original high school class. He was the No. 37 overall player and the No. 6 shooting guard in the country for the 2022 cycle, per 247Sports Composite rankings.

At 6-foot-4, Chandler has great size for the 2-guard spot is known as a strong 3-point shooter. He was also known for being an elite athlete at the high school level. Coming out of high school, Chandler also had offers from programs such as Arizona, Oregon, Gonzaga, Creighton and others.

Pope is off to a great start as Kentucky’s head coach. Wildcat fans filled Rupp Arena for his welcome ceremony last week and he’s spent the last few days hitting the recruiting trail hard.

It remains to be seen how much of BYU’s 2023-24 roster will join Pope in Lexington next season. However, this is a good start as Pope looks to rebuild a roster that has been decimated by transfer portal entries and NBA Draft declarations. Kentucky is expected to make more additions over the next few weeks as it prepares for Pope’s first season in charge.

Here are some highlights from Chandler’s high school career:
