Kentucky fans wanting to get a long look at Joey Gatewood got their wish on Thursday afternoon when coach Mark Stoops announced that Terry Wilson would be out with a lingering wrist injury suffered in the loss at Missouri.

There are three quarterbacks in the mix, but Stoops outlined how it would shake out and that begins with Gatewood as the starter, and third-string Beau Allen also in the picture.

“He has the keys this week,” Stoops said. “He’s the starting quarterback … I’m anticipating Joey going out there and playing well,” Stoops said, via 247Sports and per Jeff Drummond. “I’ve wanted to see Beau (Allen) all year.”

No matter who is the quarterback, the offense needs to improve.

“We need to push the ball down the field a little bit and create something in the pass game. Unfortunately, we’re not very effective in that,” he said at his Monday press conference. “I want to see our team play better. Anytime you say something like that, it’s going to get zeroed in on any one particular person, we need to play as a unit. We all understand that. We have to put our players in a position to do what they can do, what are their strengths?

“We need to execute that. That goes across the board,” Stoops concluded. “I want our unit to play better. I want us to play better across the board.”
