Kentucky breezed to a win in Week 1 over Ball State Saturday 44-14 in its season opener, jumping out to a good start before a long season.

In his press conference Monday, Wildcats’ head coach Mark Stoops reflected on what he liked and didn’t like from the first game of the 2023 campaign.

Despite the win, Stoops thought his team didn’t play as clean as they should have. The Wildcats had an interception and 2 fumbles, though both were recovered by the offense.

“What we did not play was very clean,” Stoops said. “I felt that Saturday and I felt that was true with watching the film. The little details in all the things we talk about. It’s a fundamental game. We played hard, we played physical, we were not always fundamentally sound. That will bite us eventually.”

He also didn’t get as many plays as he would have liked due to some long drives by Ball State and some failed 3rd-down conversions early in the game.

“We didn’t have a lot of plays,” Stoops said. “Therefor you’re not getting a lot of touches. We simply didn’t have enough plays. Offensively, we didn’t convert. We had some really good field position in the first half. That felt frustrating.”

Stoops gave an update on Kenneth Horsey, who left the game with an injury.

“The good news is is that it will not be season ending at this point, but he will be out for a couple of weeks I think,” Stoops said.

Ultimately, Stoops appreciated his teams effort, but expects both the team and coaches to prepare better for this week’s game against Eastern Kentucky.

“The big things is we have to teach better,” Stoops said. “We have to teach off this. Our team had great effort and I love that. They wanted to be physical, they wanted to be dominant, they wanted to impose their will on both sides. I thought our guys came out ready to play. With that, with the hype, it’s maturity. It’s us coaching.”
