Saturday against Arkansas, the scoreboard credited Kentucky with a 24-20 win over Arkansas. But it felt more like Lynn Bowden 24, Arkansas 20. The junior wide receiver played quarterback and led Kentucky to a 330-yard ground attack, rushing for 196 yards himself. He also looked pretty smooth on a handful of downfield passes (7-for-11 for 78 yards and 1 TD). When has one player done so much to earn a victory?

Here are a few other examples from Mark Stoops’ tenure at Kentucky, and a final conclusion about where Bowden’s heroics would rank.

Jojo Kemp, 2014 vs. South Carolina

Kemp powered the ball down Carolina’s throat with 131 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns, mostly late and mostly from the Wildcat. Carolina looked powerless to stop him, and his heroics helped Stoops claim his 1st meaningful win in Lexington.

Better than Bowden vs. Arkansas in 2019? Kemp’s heroics were amazing, but the play of the game was Bud Dupree catching a deflected interception and running it back for the game-winning score, so no.

Benny Snell, 2016 vs. New Mexico State

The game, a 62-42 win, might not be memorable — but it was Snell’s 1st action carrying the ball, the week after presumptive UK starter Drew Barker was ruled out for what became the rest of his career. Snell rushed for 136 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground, helping out new QB Stephen Johnson and displaying his tenacious running style.

Better than Bowden? Nah. It was a memorable game, and the first of many memorable games for Benny, but it wasn’t quite the big stages that SEC play represents.

Stephen Johnson, 2016 vs. Louisville

Kentucky was nearly a 4-touchdown underdog, but Johnson, despite a shoulder injury, passed for 338 yards and 3 touchdowns and rushed for another 83 yards as UK upset its in-state rival. The unheralded Johnson outplayed the previous year’s Heisman Trophy winner, Lamar Jackson.

Better than Bowden? Actually, yes. Sure, Johnson had plenty of help. But in outplaying what might have been the best player in the country and winning the game as a massive underdog, he cemented his place in UK lore.

Terry Wilson, 2018 vs. Florida

Kentucky hadn’t won in The Swamp since 1979, but Wilson, by virtue of 151 yards passing and 2 scores in the air and 105 yards rushing and a key touchdown on the ground, all but locked up the win for the visiting team.

Better than Bowden? Yes. Slight edge to Wilson, just because it had been almost 40 years since Kentucky had won at The Swamp, and he delivered the win in his 2nd start at UK to end Kentucky’s overall 31-game losing streak to the Gators.

Lynn Bowden, 2018 vs. Missouri

With an offensive-challenged Kentucky team needing a win in Columbia to have a shot at the SEC East title, Bowden saved the day, both with 166 receiving yards on 13 catches, and with a punt return touchdown that swung momentum UK’s way in the eventual 15-14 win.

Better than Bowden? Bowden vs. Bowden is a tough matchup. But ultimately, while the Missouri win was big, this Arkansas game felt like a season-saver. And 2018 Bowden had a Terry Wilson to C.J. Conrad pass with no time on the clock to help him out.

Josh Allen, 2018 vs. Penn State

It’s hard to say 1 defensive player won a game, but in the Citrus Bowl, Allen’s 3 sacks and blocked field goal were all significant factors in Kentucky’s 27-24 win over the Nittany Lions.

Better than Bowden? Again, comparing a defensive player and an offensive player is kind of like apples and oranges. But this orange came in the Citrus Bowl and was the crowning moment on an unforgettable season for both player and team, so, yes.
