Brian Kelly owned up to a mistake that his coaching staff made during the loss to Alabama on Saturday.

LSU was in the game until late, but a few slip ups on the defensive end led to big plays from Alabama and ultimately a 2-touchdown lead late in the game. In his press conference Monday, Kelly explained that he made a mistake on some crucial 3rd down plays.

“I think you’re always looking at things you can do over. Hindsight is 20/20 right,” Kelly said. “Could we have spied the quarterback, absolutely. There were 3rd down situations that clearly we felt like we wanted to be in more coverage, and we felt like our unit pass rush could keep them in the pocket, that did not prove to be the case. I would say that probably was the No. 1 thing in terms of, if we had to do some things coaching wise differently, we probably would have employed a spy technique.”

Jalen Milroe torched LSU on the ground, rushing for more than 150 yards on the night and picking up 4 rushing touchdowns. By not bringing the spy on a few of those 3rd down plays, Milroe managed to use his legs to pick up the 1st downs with LSU’s defense back in coverage.

Now Kelly looks to move on from the loss and prepare for the Florida game on Saturday.
