Brian Kelly was the first coach to dial in to the SEC’s final teleconference of the season Wednesday morning.

And with the recent firings of Mississippi State’s Zach Arnett and Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher fresh on the mind, Kelly fielded some questions about the nature of firings in his line of work.

Ultimately, he told reporters that he hates to see someone lose their job, but that’s just the nature of the business:

“You hate to see fellow coaches lose their job, but we all understand this is part of the business,” Kelly said.”… as coaches we all understand this is a business where you have to move forward.”

With a firing usually comes a huge buyout to pay, such as in Texas A&M’s case regarding Fisher. The Aggies owe Fisher over $75 million after firing him ahead of the termination of his contract.

Here’s what Kelly had to say about buyouts:

“Nothing surprised me what schools are willing to commit to,” Kelly said. “Everyone is all in. Everyone can assume if you’re not getting the results you want, change can easily happen.”

The Tigers take on Georgia State this Saturday in their penultimate game of the regular season.
