On Tuesday evening, it was revealed that star LSU CB Derek Stingley Jr. would wear the iconic No. 7 jersey — given to a prominent playmaker on each year’s team — in 2021.

Stingley follows in the footsteps of Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu, Leonard Fournette and other LSU stars to wear the jersey.

After being awarded the No. 7 jersey, Stingley said he’ll do his best to live up to it in a statement (via 247Sports):

“It’s an honor to be part of the legacy of players that have worn the No. 7 jersey,” Stingley said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to upholding the tradition and the standard of play that has been set by the group that has come before me.”

Coach Ed Orgeron also issued a statement, praising the history of the jersey and Stingley himself:

“Derek is very deserving of following in the footsteps of some of the great players in LSU history in wearing the No. 7 jersey,” Orgeron said. “Derek is an outstanding young man from right here in Baton Rouge who represents our program with tremendous character and a desire to make all of those around him better.

“He inspires his teammates to achieve great things on and off the field. He’s most deserving of wearing the No. 7 jersey in 2021 for the LSU Tigers. I know he will wear it with pride and will represent it well.”

Will Stingley have a big 2021 campaign? We’ll find out this fall. It’ll likely be his last season in Baton Rouge before heading to the NFL.
