Derrius Guice’s picture won’t be on the preseason magazines in the coming weeks. He won’t be listed among preseason Heisman Trophy possibilities. And his highlights won’t be spliced for halftime shows and live look-ins around the country. But if there was a first ballot All-Wingman team, Guice would be the face.

Guice had 436 rushing yards and three TDs as a freshman last season. Given Heisman Trophy contender Leonard Fournette’s carries — 300 in 2015 — Guice’s speed and elusiveness could be just the recipe to keep Fournette fresh down the stretch this season.

Imagine defenses switching from absorbing Fournette’s punishing style, and then chasing from sideline to sideline. With a 222-pound frame, Guice is also capable of short-yardage and every down situations.

Guice, who was also a highly-touted running back recruit, is capable of lining up in multiple formations, and freeing up Fournette to split out wide, and be more active in the passing game.

Fournette, after all, was third in receptions for LSU last year with 19 catches for 253 yards.

Guice was the fifth-best running back in the 2015 class, according to 247Sports.

A high school coach familiar with Guice favorably compared him with former LSU star Jeremy Hill, NOLA.com reported.

Guice “is a little bit faster than (Hill) and a little bit shorter,” high school coach Eric Held told NOLA.com, and “nothing they did at a young age in their first year at LSU, none of that was surprising to anybody that was around them.”

Guice’s most memorable game in 2015 came against South Carolina when he had 16 carries for 161 yards and a touchdown.

Guice’s elementary school PE teacher, D’Artagnan Williams, told the Advocate that playing alongside Fournette motivates Guice.

“It makes him more hungry,” Williams told the paper. “He doesn’t want to be Leonard but wants to be at Leonard’s status. He feels like it’s 1A and 1B.

“He takes from him. He takes a lot of pointers. He turns it up an extra notch because he knows, playing behind the best in the country, he’s going to have to show the coaches.”
