Nick Saban is not just known for elite recruiting classes and national titles, he is also known for helping to revive the coaching careers of former head coaches looking for a new opportunity.

In recent history, Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkisian are just a few of the names that have used their time on Alabama’s coaching staff to catapult into a new head coaching job. During the 2021 season, former head coaches Doug Marrone and Bill O’Brien served on Saban’s staff as OL coach and OC/QBs coach, respectively.

During a recent appearance for WGNO ABC, ex-LSU coach Ed Orgeron was asked about the possibility of making a similar move in Tuscaloosa. WGNO Sports Director Ed Daniels mentioned a fan having “a very bad nightmare” of Orgeron leading an Alabama defense while helping Saban recruit the state of Louisiana.

“It will never happen. Don’t have to worry about it,” said Orgeron as he was quick to shoot down the question. “That will never happen with Ed Orgeron, I promise you.”

It is certainly hard to envision Coach O ever helping lead the Crimson Tide on Saturdays. However, that old adage of “never say never” springs to mind. We’ll just have to wait and see what the future holds.
