Ed Orgeron met the media on Sunday night after LSU announced that he and the program would part ways after the 2021 season. Orgeron is owed a buyout of over $16.9 million, which will be paid out in 18 installments over the next 4-plus years.

It’s probably not difficult to imagine Orgeron as a head coach — or at the very least on a sideline in some capacity — at some point in the very near future, but how soon would that be? During the press conference, he was asked straight out if he planned on coaching in 2022.

“No,” he responded simply.

After being asked why that was the case, he went on to elaborate on what his plans would be following the season.

“I want to take a little time off,” he said. “You know, I’m 60 years old. I’ve coached for 37 years…I’m going to take a little time off to find out what direction I want to be in. You asked me if today I’m not going to coach. That might be different a month from now, but right now I want to take a little time off (and) spend it with my kids.”

He would also throw in a joke about his sizable buyout.

“I think I’m going to have enough money to buy me a hamburger every once in a while, maybe a double-meat cheeseburger,” he smiled.
