Being unsettled at the quarterback position is not the ideal scenario with Alabama scheduled to come to Baton Rouge in under two weeks but that’s where Ed Orgeron and his Tigers are currently at as Myles Brennan continues to rehab from his abdomen injury suffered against Missouri back on Oct. 10.

Thankfully, LSU is on a bye this week and will have time to continue to rest Brennan and to allow freshmen quarterbacks T.J. Finley and Max Johnson every opportunity to compete in practice before the undefeated Crimson Tide come to town.

During his Monday press conference, Orgeron shared the latest on Brennan’s status in Baton Rouge.

“We are going to throw the football a little bit with him today, he’s going to get in the offense, see what he can do. He’s not ready yet, it’s day-by-day,” Orgeron shared. “I don’t know if he’s going to be ready for the Alabama game.

“I think we’ll know a little bit more next week. We are going to try and let him do a couple of things today, see how he can do.”

If Brennan can’t go, Finley or Johnson will be asked to step up. Which one remains unclear following Finley’s struggles and Johnson’s first meaningful action, which both came last weekend against Auburn.

Finley completed just 13 of 24 passes for 143 yards, threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. Johnson completed 15 of 24 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown.

Is Finley entrenched as LSU’s go-to option if Brennan can’t play or did Saturday’s results shake up the competition?

“No, it’s different. We expected T.J. to take another step (vs. Auburn) and obviously, he didn’t, he struggled. He’s a freshman, I can’t put that on him,” Orgeron shared. “Especially going on the road, it wasn’t a hostile environment road but it was different. If Myles can’t practice, we’re going to see who’s better, T.J. or Max. Max did a fine job (vs. Auburn). So they are going to compete, it’s going to be a competition.

“Hopefully Myles is ready, if not, I’m going to have them compete and see who practices better and we’ll see what happens. If T.J. would have played better, obviously, he would have had it locked up but he didn’t. Max went in there and did a good job so it’s an open competition.”
