What Ed Orgeron said after picking up his first win as LSU's head coach
Though he went 5-2 as LSU’s interim head coach after Les Miles was fired, Ed Orgeron earned his first official win as the team’s head coach by defeating Louisville and Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson in Saturday’s Citrus Bowl.
The Tigers held the Cardinals without a touchdown for the first time since 2010 in the 29-9 victory, after which Coach O received a well-deserved Gatorade shower.
Following the game, Coach O was in good spirits as he spoke with the media. Here’s what the winning coach had to say:
On a great defensive effort that held Louisville without a touchdown for the first time since 2010:
Coach O: You've got great players let them play, right?
I'm awful proud of the way they bought in. #LSU— Scott Rabalais (@RabalaisAdv) December 31, 2016
Coach O: DBs covered guys, didn't give up big plays, just a tremendous game. #LSU

On defensive coordinator Dave Aranda switching up LSU’s defensive strategy:
#LSU coach Ed Orgeron: We didn't blitz much in the season. It was brilliant on Dave's part to mix it up. We stayed one step ahead.

Coach O on Aranda's defensive plan:
He was one step ahead the whole game. Came back from Xmas holidays he had a notebook on UL offense. #LSU— Scott Rabalais (@RabalaisAdv) December 31, 2016
On picking up his first win as the Tigers’ official head coach:
#LSU coach Ed Orgeron: I'm happy for the team and Tiger family. This was never about me.

On getting players to return in 2017:
Coach O says will recruit juniors to return, with promise of doing better things in 2017. #LSU

On RB Derrius Guice’s big day in place of the injured Leonard Fournette:
Coach O on Guice: He stepped in for (Fournette) and didn't blink an eye. He's one of best players in USA, expect him to be best next yr #LSU

LSU finished the season with a record of 8-4. Orgeron will have full control of the program heading into 2017.
