Ed Orgeron shares insight on what LSU’s offense will look like, not opposed to playing two QBs

Under the direction of Dave Aranda, the defense has led the way in Baton Rouge over the previous two seasons for LSU. If the Tigers are going to take the next step under Ed Orgeron and challenge Alabama and Auburn (and possibly Mississippi State) for the West title in 2018, the offense needs to take significant strides in Coach O’s second full season as full-time head coach.

During a Wednesday appearance on WJOX 94.5 FM program 3 Man Front, Orgeron offered up this take when asked what the LSU offense would look like under new offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger.

“It will be very multiple. We’re trying to find out who will be our starting quarterback — it is a tight race,” Orgeron said on the show. “Myles Brennen, Justin McMillian, Nowell Narcisse, each of them have different skill sets. We are putting in a spread offense, mainly out of one-back situations, three wide receivers, sometimes four, sometimes five. We’ll also have some 41 personnel to bang it out there, like LSU knows how to do. Not as much shifts and motions. More or less, reading what the defense gives us, taking what the defense gives us and doing a great job of playcalling.”

As for the strength of the unit, Coach O believes the guys up front will lead the offense this season.

“I think one of the biggest strengths we’ll have is our offensive line. We are big, physical, have a lot of guys returning,” Orgeron said. “Steve Ensminger is a tireless worker, he’s an LSU Tiger. I know he’s going to come up with a great offense.”

Orgeron was later asked a follow up on the ongoing quarterback competition. Here’s what he had to say about the most discussed position battle currently going on in Baton Rouge.

“I want to give them all an opportunity, I want to let them use their skill sets. I want them to see it, I want the whole team to see it and eventually, we’ll see who the starting quarterback is,” Orgeron said. “By the way he acts, by the way he presents himself — on and off the field — by the way he leads the team and the way he’s productive. And when we are comfortable announcing the starting quarterback, we’ll do that.”

Coach O then revealed he has no issue playing two QBs next season if that’s what will help the team the most.

“Let me tell you this, I have no problem playing two quarterbacks,” Coach O continued. “If one quarterback can do something very well and another quarterback can come in and do some runs for us, we may do that. So there’s a lot of options we have, I’m excited about all three quarterbacks and so is our team.”

Considering he said if a secondary quarterback can come in and run, Coach O may have tipped his hand that Brennan is leading the QB derby at this point, but with so much time to come between now and the Sept. 2 opener against Miami, a lead now likely won’t be safe for that long if another player emerges before the trip to Arlington.
