Returning from a serious pectoral tear may be the theme of the NFL playoffs this year, and one former LSU star is continuing that trend.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that one week after J.J. Watt returned from a torn pectoral muscle that he suffered in October, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Kwon Alexander is expected to do the same.

Alexander has made progress in his recovery from the injury he suffered on Halloween to the point that the Niners now believe he has a good chance of returning for Saturday’s NFC divisional round playoff game, league sources told ESPN. The 49ers had not thought Alexander would be at this point in his recovery, but the former Pro Bowler has defied expectations.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said this past week that Alexander is “coming along” in his recovery, adding that there is a “definitely a chance” for the linebacker to return for the postseason.

At LSU, Alexander appeared in 32 games (23 starts) in three seasons (2012-14), and made 156 tackles, 6 pass defensed, 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries and 1.5 sacks. As a junior in 2014, he earned Second-Team All-SEC honors.

This is Alexander’s first season in San Francisco after he started his career in Tampa Bay where he played for four seasons.
