LSU has gotten off to a 3-2 start after five games with losses to UCLA and Auburn.

While many believe the slow start could be because of the loss of Dave Aranda, Joel Klatt gave his thoughts on the matter.

During a recent appearance on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd,” Klatt broke down why he thinks Orgeron got a little lucky by coaching Joe Burrow.

“It’s hard to defend his record,” Klatt said, per Nick Kosko of 247Sports. “And you can say, ‘What do you mean he won the national championship?’ He struck lightning in a bottle with a transfer quarterback that had a magical season with a young coordinator that was doing things that were very unique in the conference offensively. They had great weapons around him. That was a lightning in a bottle year that was one of the great teams in college football history that just kind of manifested.”

Last year the Tigers defense took a step back. The Tigers defense allowed 492 yards of offense per game, finishing with a 5-5 record in 2020. This led to the second departure of Bo Pelini from LSU. His first stint at defensive coordinator with the team was back in 2005 with Les Miles as head coach.

“Now he has a lot to do with that, but then he lost those two coordinators Joe Brady and Dave Aranda. Remember Dave Aranda took the job at Baylor and he’s doing a nice job there. So he had to retool his staff and he hired guys that he had to fire the next year, including Bo Pelini, who was a disaster defensively.”

Lastly, Klatt also brought up how without the success that Joe Burrow brought to LSU and Ed Orgeron, his career win record is .600.

“If you take, and I know this is not fair to do, but if you look at his record at LSU, and you take the 15-0 out,” said Klatt. “They measure themselves with Alabama. How are we competing with Alabama … If you throw out the Ole Miss years and the Joe Burrow year and you see what he is, he’s basically a .600 coach. I’m sorry, .600 does not work at LSU. Not with the standard they’ve set within the sport.”
