Heather Dinich, the ESPN reporter who covers the College Football Playoff committee, appeared on the rankings show on Tuesday night, and outlined how LSU could make history.

“LSU sitting there at 5, ahead of USC to me indicates yes, if LSU runs the table, somehow beats Georgia, wins the SEC, they will make history as the first 2-loss team in the College Football Playoff,” she said.

Dinich then said Notre Dame is the common thread between all the discussions of USC and Clemson, which was “hammered” by Notre Dame, which could be a prime reason why the Tigers are left out. Notre Dame beating USC could also eliminate the entire Pac-12 on Saturday. What’s more, if Ohio State loses to Michigan, the Buckeye supporters will immediately shift to promoting the win over Notre Dame, which is now ranked No. 15.

Rece Davis also pointed out the margin of a potential USC win over Notre Dame could be an interesting comparison with Ohio State since Notre Dame will be a common opponent.
