Jay Johnson still processed the championship win Monday night at the College World Series when the LSU coach tried to put his team in historic context.

“I really believe this will go down in one of the best teams in college baseball history. So consistent in the regular season. I think the SEC Tournament is the only week of the year we had a losing record, if you think about that,” he said.  “Not only one losing week for an entire regular season, 11 wins in the postseason, 6 of them against SEC teams. And I really believe we played and beat every team, the best team that we could have played along the way throughout the entire tournament at that spot.”

It also bounced back from an eye-popping loss on Sunday. A day after it gave up the most runs ever in a College World Series game, LSU delivered its first national title since 2009 with an 18-4 victory over Florida on Monday night in a decisive Game 3.

“So I love these guys. I’m so proud of them. And they are a worthy champion, if there ever was a worthy champion,” Johnson said.
