Jay Johnson and the Tigers have reportedly agreed to a contract extension that will make the LSU baseball coach one of the highest-paid coaches in the country.

According to The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander, LSU is signing Johnson to a new seven-year, $12.55 million contract. Under the terms of his old deal, Johnson was tied to the university until 2026. His new contract runs through the 2030 season. It is pending approval by the LSU Board of Supervisors on Friday.

Johnson led LSU to a 54-17 record in his second season with the program. An 18-4 win over Florida in Game 3 of the College World Series Finals captured LSU’s seventh national championship in program history.

He was voted the 2023 National Coach of the Year by multiple awarding bodies after helping LSU to its first CWS appearance and its first 50-win season since 2017. The 19 SEC league victories also marked the most in a season since 2017. The Tigers were the consensus No. 1 team in America for the first 12 weeks of the regular season.

According to The Advocate, Johnson will make $1.65 million next year in base salary and supplemental compensation — up from $1.3 million — with additional earnings available through postseason incentives. The report from The Advocate also included details about the incentive structure in Johnson’s new deal.

Over the life of the new contract, Johnson will make an average of $1.79 million per year before incentives, according to The Advocate. The report states that his annual compensation will raise incrementally each year until it hits $2 million during the final year of the deal.

It’s believed the new contract will make Johnson the second-highest-paid college baseball coach in the country. Vanderbilt’s Tim Corbin is believed to be the top earner. (As a private school, Vanderbilt is not subject to open records laws.)
