Jayden Daniels has been amazing for LSU this year. Though the Tigers finished the regular season with 3 losses, they finished strong on Saturday with a 42-30 win over Texas A&M.
Daniels was his usual magnificent self, throwing for 235 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also ran for 120 yards on 11 carries. He now has 50 total touchdowns accounted for on the season, which puts him in rare company.
But will Heisman voters be able to overlook LSU’s 9-3 regular-season record when casting their ballots? Well, history does seem to say it’s possible. A dozen players have won college football’s most prestigious award with 3 regular-season losses.
Here are the 12 players who have won the Heisman Trophy with 3 regular-season losses or more:
- 1950: Vic Janowicz, Ohio State — 6-3
- 1961: Ernie Davis, Syracuse — 7-3
- 1970: Jim Plunkett, Stanford — 8-3
- 1980: George Rogers, South Carolina — 8-3
- 1981: Marcus Allen, USC — 8-3
- 1985: Bo Jackson, Auburn — 8-3
- 1987: Tim Brown, Notre Dame — 8-3
- 1998: Ricky Williams, Texas — 8-3
- 2007: Tim Tebow, Florida — 9-3
- 2011: Robert Griffin III, Baylor — 9-3
- 2016: Lamar Jackson, Louisville — 9-3
Will Daniels become the 13th such player to hoist the award? It may come down to how Oregon’s Bo Nix and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. look in a potential Pac-12 title game matchup next week in Las Vegas.
Win or lose, Daniels has had an absolutely incredible season for the Tigers.
