Between the third and fourth quarters of Saturday afternoon’s LSU-Florida game, the Gators played “I Won’t Back Down” by legendary rocker and Gainesville native Tom Petty, who died this week at the age of 66.
However, as the song came over the P.A. system at The Swamp, the LSU band was playing over it in what seemed to be a disrespectful display.
On Sunday morning, though, the LSU band clarified what happened, saying they meant no disrespect and that it was simply a timing mistake:
The tribute ended up being incredibly moving, with nearly everyone in the stadium singing along to the iconic song.
Though there is plenty of bad blood in the rivalry between the Tigers and Gators, it’s nice to know that this situation was simply an honest mistake and not a disrespectful gesture.
