LSU fires marching band director
Less than two weeks after being put on administrative leave, LSU marching band director Roy King has been fired, The Advocate confirmed through his attorney, Jill Craft, on Tuesday.
King had worked in LSU’s Golden Band From Tigerland’s administration for 18 years and served as the athletic marching band director for five years before receiving a letter from the school notifying him of its decision.
Craft informed The Advocate that the letter included accusations that King wrongfully gave out scholarships to members of the Golden Girls and the Color Guard. He was also being held responsible for money stolen from the desk of an LSU School of Music employee along with nepotism as his daughter has an internship at the School of Music.
King was put on administrative leave on April 6 while LSU’s human resources department conducted an investigation, Craft told The Advocate. She said the probe had been going on for the last three-and-a-half months.
Still, Craft defended her client in each respect, and informed the publication that King is considering suing the university.
She also described tension between King and LSU’s School of Music, which she alleged is attempting to gain some power over athletic funds allocated to the Tiger Band, Color Guard and Golden Girls. Each of those entities were under King’s direction.
