Two days ago, it appeared that LSU wouldn’t be facing Georgia Southern’s starting quarterback Shai Werts.

Werts was recently arrested for speeding, and while the arrest was taking place, police found traces of cocaine on the hood of his car. He claimed it was bird poop that he attempted clean off at the car wash. It was announced that Werts was suspended from all team activities.

Nonetheless, the two-year starter is already back at practice, according to WJCL 22’s Frank Sulkowski. The ABC affiliate received a statement from the university.

“Quarterback Shai Werts returned to practice today after submitting to, and passing, a drug test. Moving forward, Shai’s case will handled in accordance with the Georgia Southern Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.”

According to the George-Anne, unless the charge is dropped, the Georgia Southern student-athlete code of conduct could still suspend him for season opener against LSU.

“Any Student-Athlete arrested and charged with a misdemeanor involving alcohol, any illegal substances or where violence is involved on or off campus will be suspended for the next immediate contest (excluding exhibitions and scrimmages), and the situation reviewed by the Athletic Director, Sport Administrator and Head Coach to determine the appropriate disciplinary action(s),” the code of conduct reads.

Werts was reportedly going 80 mph when cops started flashing their lights to pull him over. He refused to pull over until he got into town, which had better lighting. The quarterback was then arrested. Authorities then began to notice a white substance on the hood of his car, and the substance tested positive for cocaine. He was charged with a misdemeanor.
