This spring was full of optimism for LSU, thanks in large part to a new offensive system and the renewed hope that Danny Etling would thrive in the new offense. After struggling in last weekend’s spring game, more bad news has hit for the LSU offense and Etling — the senior went under the knife immediately after the conclusion to spring in Baton Rouge.

According to LSU head coach Ed Orgeron, Etling’s procedure was described as “minor” and he is not expected to miss any games this fall.

“Danny had a minor back procedure this morning and everything went alright,” Orgeron said via released statement from LSU.

Here’s what Orgeron had to say about the ongoing quarterback competition following Saturday night’s spring game. Etling’s performance was not particularly efficient.

“Here is the deal. Nobody has earned the starting spot and you saw that tonight,” Orgeron said. “If we had to name a starter tonight it is not a clear-cut winner. Most of the spring Danny (Etling) has been better. Underneath the pressure, the guys did not perform the way we wanted them to, so they are going to have to show me who is able to perform under pressure to be the LSU quarterback.”

The team’s addition of offensive Matt Canada has helped to bring new hope to Baton Rouge this offseason. Along with bringing his highly productively offensive system to LSU, Canada is known for being somewhat of a quarterback guru. With Etling hoping to end his college career on a high note, this injury now becomes the latest hurdle facing the former Purdue transfer in his hopes of becoming the first quarterback of strength for the LSU offense since Zach Mettenberger in 2013.
