LSU (7-0) enters Saturday’s potential SEC game of the year ranked No. 4 in both major polls.
The Tigers remained slotted there as one of eight power-conference unbeatens. Take down Alabama in Tuscaloosa, though, and LSU may start to generate first-place votes.

Regardless of this week’s polls — and that includes the first College Football Playoff selection committee rankings to be released Tuesday — LSU’s path to an SEC championship gets much clearer if the team can beat Alabama on Saturday. Beat Ole Miss on the road, avoid a slip-up in Death Valley and waltz into Atlanta to face Florida, in all likelihood.
Lose, and that path becomes murkier.
Still, just a few teams rank ahead of LSU in either of the major polls: Ohio State (both), Baylor (both), TCU (Coaches) and Clemson (Associated Press).
Alabama is ranked No. 7 in both major polls entering this year’s annual showdown.
