3 takeaways from LSU's wild win at South Carolina
That was fun, wasn’t it?
Well, check that. That was fun for those of us who didn’t have a dog in the LSU-South Carolina fight at Williams-Brice Stadium. For those of you who did have a vested interest, LSU’s 36-33 victory in Columbia was pure torture.
LSU rallied back from a 17-0 deficit, and with a slew of controversial calls down the stretch, it avoided loss No. 2.
Here were 3 takeaways from the thriller in Columbia:
1. That was pure chaos
I mean, goodness gracious. Where should we start? What about the fact that besides LSU overcoming a 3-score deficit, we saw South Carolina QB LaNorris Sellers leave the game with an ankle injury. We watched a seemingly phantom pass-interference penalty negate a massive pass play in the middle of the 4th quarter.
And yet, after 5 combined turnovers and a go-ahead LSU touchdown late, South Carolina had a chance to tie the game with a 49-yard field goal attempt. But the kick went wide left and LSU somehow survived.
The Gamecocks had a chance to enter into the AP Top 25, where they’ve only played 3 games since they last hosted College GameDay. But instead, they couldn’t get the breaks down the stretch.
2. LSU found a running back and his name is Caden Durham
Up until Saturday, Durham had 5 carries for 4 yards on his 12 snaps. He was third in the pecking order even after the season-ending injury to John Emery Jr.
But boy, did Durham make a case to be at the top of the LSU backfield.
Durham was exactly what the Tigers needed to take some heat off the LSU passing game. The true freshman had a career high 98 yards and 2 rushing scores. Durham showed the burst with a 26-yard run that jumpstarted the LSU offense after it fell behind 17-0. Meanwhile, Kaleb Jackson and Josh Williams were limited to 17 carries for 47 yards, but it’s worth noting that Williams had LSU’s go-ahead score late.
By day’s end, it was clear — Brian Kelly would be wise to make Durham the bell-cow back moving forward.
3. LSU now will be unbeaten in SEC play until … mid-October?
Wait, how is that possible?
Well, LSU faces UCLA next week, then it has a bye and it’ll face South Alabama to round out nonconference play. So a 1-0 mark in SEC play will be good until at least Oct. 12, which will be the showdown against Ole Miss in Death Valley.
LSU certainly has its issues to correct, with those 2 favorable matchups on the way, there’s fairly good chance that LSU and Ole Miss are playing in a game with major 12-team Playoff stakes.
Easily top 3 worst officiated games of all time. Grats to the refs for the win.
I would like to thank the the referees, your LSU Tigers MVPs, for keeping it close and helping all of us that be on the spread win big.
And here we see two people who didn’t watch the game, but looked at some salty twitter posts by gamecock fans and decided that instead of a well-earned LSU victory, the refs screwed the gamecocks instead of calling a good game and making fair calls.
I challenge these two retards to give me two examples of a bad call on the Gamecocks or good calls not given to them.
Angry little Cajun. Someone’s been drinking. Have yourself another why you contemplate the fact Brian Kelly is your head coach for the foreseeable future.
As a SC fan I try and never blame refs
But
1) a pic 6 negated bc a DL pushed thevQB
2) please :. Point to me the Pi against the SC player in the 4th that would have ( at worst ) set up a fired goal?
There were some iligitamate / obvious penalties but those were GAME CHANGERS..
The phantom PI I agree with you, not sure what they thought they saw…
Did you watch the game?
Yes but I’ve also been tailgating all day too so disregard that phantom dissertation. As bad as the officiating was your Coots still had a chance at the end. That missed fg seemed to be a fitting finish. Shame. Tough loss all around.
I will agree that the PI was bad, but it was clearly a cheap shot at an unprotected QB and that cannot be tolerated. And the refs did make a few bad calls in yall’s favor and missed what seemed like a dozen holds in the game for both teams.
Well, you have skin in the game, so clearly you watched the game with blinders on. The ref handed LSU the game in the 4th.
You want examples:
1- phantom offensive pass interference call on SC long pass that would have put them in scoring position.
2 – The 100yd pick six nullified for blocking the QB who had become a defender and was moving toward the play/runner.
3- the phantom flinch that resulted in a false start on 4th and a yard.
Even the ESPN announcers at the end of the game said it was sad that the refs were the ones that determined the outcome of the game.
But again, you are not going to admit anything, because your team came away with a win they did not deserve.
You left out the phantom missed field goal from 49 yards out on the last play…
The roughing the passer penalty against the cocks was pure BS. He had already thrown an interception. He started to run towards the CB and was pushed down. Really? Three TDs called back. All three, I couldn’t figure out what the violation was. Rece Davis said it best, “You hate to see a game decided by penalties”. Cocks were the better team yesterday.
I feel your pain, tough way to lose knowing you outplayed the opponent. I imagine Ky fans feel the same way this morning. UGa and LSU were extremely fortunate to get the W.
More difficult game than I expected. Congrats on USC for playing a great game. At this point, a win is a win.
Good grief. What a game. Credit LSU for fighting to the end, but felt like Cocky should have won that by 2 TDs.
The biggest one was two pick 6 negated by stupid mistakes. That last one technically could have been put as a block since the play was developing and he was in front of the QB.
Lot of emotion in that game.
Well it was definitely blindside. Combine that with it being a QB your getting a flag. Really stupid play
Hahaha
he was literally looking at the play
He was pushed .. not slammed .. not “housed “
Please stop
WOW – this hurts. What kills me is the terrible calls in the mid 4th quarter.
Congrats to LSU – they found a way to win – and their QB is a killer.
GO COCKS
That pick six called back was insane.
No, it wasn’t
Eat a bag of d i c k s, loser.
Yes it was
I guess pushing a QB on a return is now illegal
Blindsiding a QB when he does not have a chance at the play is going to get a flag. Those days of taking a free shot at the QB after an interception are over
Pushing a QB when hee. Looking at the play is not “blindsighting “
Sorry .. please see film
Your blindsided excuse is not the case. Roughing the “passer” was called. Clearly not a passer while clearly taking off after his intercepter.
Roughing the passer was not called. According to the play by play Unnecessary Roughness was the call. If nothing else we can all agree on the unnecessary part…especially since neither player involved was going to impact the play.
How in the world did lsu win this game?
SC starting QB was injured at the half, had to leave the game.
Backup QB (Robby Ashford) couldn’t throw, LSU stacked the box.
1st pick six was taken away due to a horsecollar call on Nussmeier (fans were livid because it was by his shirt not his pads, but that became a rule last season.)
2nd pick six was taken away due to Kennard either blindside blocking or unnecessary roughness call on Nussmeier AFTER he threw an interception.
Fans were livid because he should be designated as a defender after throwing the pick but that didn’t work out that way.
There’s more BS all over the game, but that’s the biggest blunders I’ve seen live from the scene of the crash.
“Backup QB (Robby Ashford) couldn’t throw”
True but he kept USC in the game. Those bad calls on the pick six’s were terrible.
It was a horse-collar. Not rocket science.
No one is disagreeing that the first pick six was negated properly. It was the SECOND one that was suspect.
“It was a horse-collar. Not rocket science.”
No one horse collared your QB.
Just because you opted to become a he after being birthed a she doesn’t mean there are no rules on football…they changed the horse collar rule last year to include not only pads (not those things you stuff in your panties once a month) and also if you drag down an opponent from behind (not the kind of behind you prefer) by the jersey.
I thought you had gender affirmation surgery, didn’t know it included a lobotomy too, you twit…
Keep sucking d i c k, she/her.
The second one was a dirty hit.
Horse collar is when you pull down. He was pulled backwards.
You should review the rule as it is written
Boo hoo hoo!
If the QB had a shot at the play it might be different. You still can’t blindside block. Back in the day you always took a shot at the QB after an interception. Not any more.
By “blind side block “
Do you mean pushing a QB looking at the play???
No.. go on ..
The refs won that game
Noon game ending at 4:10 without even going to overtime.
NCAA during offseason: “Hey, I know a good idea, let’s incorporate the NFL’s two minute warning into college football.”
Refs absolutely impacted the outcome of the game. South Carolina was robbed, though they definitely hurt themselves at keys times too.
That was an absolutely brutal way to lose a game. The officiating was really bad, but the biggest reason for the loss was #5 taking a shot at the QB on the pick six. That game is over if he doesn’t do that.
100%
Stupid and uncalled for hit, simply taking the opportunity for a cheap shot on Nuss. Add in 13 penalties for 130ish yards, lack of discipline was costly for the coots.
How’s it a cheap shot it the quarterback was turned to run to make the tackle
The hit came from the side, and blindside roughness call was flagged properly. All the idiot had to do was screen him off, not shove him from the side and snap his neck like that. Was surprised Nuss didn’t get injured. The sad part is that Nuss would not have gotten to the pick 6 db anyway.
He was literally pushed
Don’t use the word “hit “
Hit…shoved. Either way it was totally unnecessary and cost the Coots the game in all likelihood…
“Either way it was totally unnecessary ”
Ok, rape defender.
And supporter of retroactive aborts in your case, don’t forget that part too, twit
“And supporter of retroactive aborts in your case”
Try harder with the insults, she/her.
This teams gonna give me heartburn! I hope Sellers recovers quickly, I hate injuries to anyone and he’s a great player. Hat tip to the Gamecocks, y’all hit us in the mouth early and didn’t let up, I said in an earlier post that Williams Brice is a tough place to play and the fans made it a fourth quarter game
1.Ugly
2.Ugly
3.Ugly
Yes.
LSU is stuck with Brian Kelly. Still not a good football team.
That was a crazy game. Congrats to LSU for getting out of there with a win.
that was torture but I loved almost every minute of it. It was highly entertaining. I expected it to be close, and I was worried about all the mistakes that the Gamecocks are prone to make. All of that came horribly and enticingly true. On the plus side, Game Day made the right choice and the fans showed up well. Our defense and special teams were as good as expected and our offense was better than I thought. Too bad our QB1 got hurt and missed the second half.
Officiating impacted this game and the only thing that’s going to overshadow them is the errors from both teams, otherwise, they should be suspended for some of those late calls. As someone else mentioned, a win is a win at this point, but I’m afraid it’s going to be a long painful year for our Tigers. Really great game to S.C. They’re gonna make noise this year if Sellers comes back soon and stays healthy. That D is legit
Props to the SC fans here. They are handling this tough loss and some frustrating calls quite well. Both teams showed nice potential. That means we aren’t there yet. Good luck going forward.
Nice win tigahs, tough loss Coots. Sure was a fun game to watch. Congrats LSU, huge road win in one of the toughest environments to play.
It was ugly, but I’ll take it. We have a few weeks to tighten up before we host Ole Miss. We aren’t ready for them yet.
Brian Kelly paid the ref at half and Shane Beamer Didn’t
Nice! Let’s not stop there……Kirby was in the car with the kid doing 100-plus and Kirby had his foot on top of the kids foot pressing the pedal down!! If you’re going to be stupid let’s go all the way!!
The kids fought their hearts out. And yet once again, the SEC refs decided the game. We’re supposed to be the best conference. We make lots of money. There is no excuse for not having the best refs in the game.
Good point.
We accommodate gambling by mandating injury reports yet continue make betting on SEC games a bad idea by allowing terrible officiating.
Cognitive dissonance mean anything to you?
Maybe instead of trying to justify it was an ‘earned’ win by LSU, just be happy the tigers snuck out of there with a win.
SC was robbed….
Thank you refs for calling a 70-30 game against SC
Thank you for negating a pic 6 ( the FIRST one was legitimately overturned ) and the phantom pass interference which would have set up SC ( At worst ) fires FG ..
Just WTF …. I don’t mind being outplayed.. but nitpicked / horrible calls losing just sucks ..
I watched the game. The refs inserted themselves to make sure the lesser team won.
That was the worst, most blatantly one-sided officiating I’ve ever seen
“LSU certainly has its issues to correct, with those 2 favorable matchups on the way, there’s fairly good chance that LSU and Ole Miss are playing in a game with major 12-team Playoff stakes.”
Playoff? LSU? If Ole Miss somehow manages to lose to LSU, it could have playoff implications for Ole Miss. LSU is not going to sniff the playoffs unless some miracles happen.
These refs should be fired immediately. The gift wrapped the win for LSU. Such a crock of sh___t.
Tough loss SC. Enough stupid mistakes, unnecessary flags and missed flags to go around on both teams. Somebody had to win.
Atmosphere was as good as it gets for a college football game. Some kind of loud.
The refs were terrible but SC has only themselves to blame. The one penalty that negated the pick 6 cost SC the game and that was a good call . A stupid push by their best player. A failure in leadership
