LSU star Dylan Crews was named the winner of the Golden Spikes Award on Sunday, just minutes before his team plays in the College World Series finals.

Crews beat out 2 other finalists for college baseball’s top honor: teammate and ace pitcher and Paul Skenes and Florida 2-way star Jac Caglianone.

Here’s the official announcement:

Entering Sunday’s contest, Crews is hitting a team-best .418 on the season. That average is good enough for the 2nd-highest all-time in program history.

Crews has also blasted 18 home runs and drove in 69 runs this season. His OPS currently sits at 1.269 for the season. He has reached base in all 69 LSU games so far this season.

Crews is the current favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, which is set for next month. The Pittsburgh Pirates hold the No. 1 pick this year.

The Golden Spikes Award has been handed out to the country’s top amateur player since 1978. Crews is the first LSU player to take home the honor since Ben McDonald in 1989.
