For the first time in LSU’s long and proud history on the gridiron, the Tigers are planning to welcome Southern and Grambling to Baton Rouge.

The first matchup against one of the in-state opponents will take play on Sept. 10, 2022, in Tiger Stadium as LSU plans to host Southern on that date. The next game will take place the following season, on Sept. 9, 2023, as Grambling makes its way to Tiger Stadium.

LSU does not historically schedule many games against in-state opponents. The Tigers have never faced off against either Southern or Grambling.

According to LSU, Southern has claimed 11 Black College Football National Titles and 19 SWAC Championships, while Grambling has won 15 national titles and 26 conference championships during their respective histories on the gridiron.

Ed Orgeron released the following statement along with the news.

“We are excited to announce our games against Southern and Grambling in the future. We have a great relationship with all universities in our state. It is important to LSU to have a great relationship with all of the universities in our state.”

LSU AD Scott Woodward also added a statement.

“This is an incredible opportunity to join our fan bases of these historic Louisiana institutions and championship programs. These dates will be days to celebrate not only football, but the state of Louisiana and all of our people. It’s time and we are all proud to be a part of it.”
