Rated as one of the top uncommitted prospects in the nation heading into the Early Signing Period, several elite football programs waited it out for Houma, La., native Maason Smith to make his college decision.

In the end, the Terrebonne High School standout decided to stay home and play for Ed Orgeron’s LSU Tigers. LSU beat out Alabama and Georgia for Smith’s services.

Smith announced his decision during a live stream on his Instagram account.

The 6-foot-5, 316-pound Smith is rated as a five-star prospect, the No. 1 overall recruit from Louisiana and the No. 18 overall prospect in the nation for the 2021 recruiting cycle by 247Sports Composite Rankings.

In addition to being a touted recruit, Smith was selected to play in the 2021 All-American Bowl before that game was canceled due to COVID.
