Malik Nabers receives permission to wear retired jersey number for New York Giants
Malik Nabers officially has his jersey number for the 2024 season.
The former LSU star held off announcing an official number this offseason. On Wednesday night, the New York Giants announced Nabers will wear the No. 1 jersey this season.
That number was previously retired by the organization in honor of the legendary Ray Flaherty. In fact, Flaherty’s No. 1 jersey was the first to be retired in pro football history.
The Giants say that Nabers received permission from Flaherty’s family to wear the number. Nabers released a statement thanking the Flaherty family for allowing him to wear the No. 1 jersey:
“Thank you to the Flaherty family for allowing me to wear Number 1 for the New York Giants.
I understand the responsibility, and I will do everything in my power to honor the Flaherty family and this organization.
I will wear the number with great pride. Can’t wait for the season to start.”

Nabers wore the No. 9 throughout offseason workouts with the Giants, but that number belongs to kicker Graham Gano. Earlier this month, Nabers told Kay Adams that he was “still thinking through” what jersey number he was going to wear.
Nabers wore No. 8 during his historic career at LSU. He was named an All-American for his efforts in 2023, which saw him catch 89 passes for 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Flaherty was a 7-time All-Pro during his playing career, with 4 of those honors coming while he was a member of the New York Giants. He was a member of the Giants’ championship team in 1937 as well.
Nabers will make his NFL regular-season debut against the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 8.
