If not for an odd NCAA rule, LSU could have had another receiving weapon for its quarterbacks to throw to last season. While Cyril Grayson didn’t get his chance to show what he can do on a college football field, he may get that opportunity at the game’s highest level next season.

The Seahawks signed the former LSU track star this offseason in the hopes of adding some elite speed to the roster. With Grayson on the track squad, the school won four NCAA national track relay titles. Considering Grayson has not played football since 2011, the transition to pro football appears to be going well for the former Tiger — Grayson was not eligible to play football in Baton Rouge because he was on scholarship at the school for track.

After viewing his initial performance, Seattle head coach Pete Carroll made some glowing remarks regarding the former Tiger. While Grayson’s speed is the obvious reason he’s been given a chance, how well he takes to the nuances of the game in time for the season will likely determine if he has any shot of making the final roster.

“Really a beautiful first impression he has made for us,’’ Carroll said according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times. “The speed is obvious. He’s got a really good catching range, he’s really natural catching the deep ball, we’ve already seen that. So we know, OK, he’s really fast, he can catch the deep ball, can we get him lined up right? Can he get his footwork right? Can he get off the line of scrimmage? Can he time it up?’’

Considering it’s only May, the Seahawks have plenty of time to help Grayson along before any cuts need to be made. However, judging by the former Tigers initial impression, it appears Seattle is going to give him every opportunity to make the final roster if he can add value to the roster.

“We’re going to be patient with him because he has such good natural talents,” Carroll said. “We’ll wait him out and see how long it takes.”
