LSU announced on Wednesday that it developed a plan which will allow the visiting team’s band to play at halftime. The year-old policy that was just lifted prohibited opposing marching bands from performing during halftime.

The new plan involves re-configuring seating areas in the South end zone to reduce congestion and safety hazards.

According to the university’s release, “There are serious safety issues to consider in adopting the proper plan for on-field performances by visiting bands,” said LSU Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Joe Alleva. “When both our band and the visiting band are scheduled to perform, there’s the possibility of having over 600 additional people converging onto already crowded sidelines while the game is in progress. There are legitimate safety concerns that can affect our student-athletes, so we have developed a plan to insure a more secure environment for everyone.”

LSU’s Director of Bands Damon Talley had this to say about sharing the field:

“We have gladly made adjustments to our own halftime show to make it possible for visiting bands to perform on the field,” Talley said. “It is important that we’re able to share the field with our colleagues who want to experience the unique atmosphere that is Tiger Stadium. We enthusiastically support the university’s effort to make this happen.”

Over the last few years, the athletic department has made changes to Tiger Stadium’s sidelines in order to provide a safer environment. According to TheAdvocate.com, band directors from opposing schools would stop traveling their full bands to Tiger Stadium because of the old policy.

LSU’s band will perform prior to the visiting team’s band during halftime.

More in-depth information about the plan can be read on the university’s website.
