Now that the start of the 2017 season is only two short weeks away, it’s probably too late for 4-star DT Tyler Shelvin to make any sort of impact at LSU this fall.

However, Shelvin’s high school coach still anticipates that the talented defender will be on campus this year, though he won’t be eligible to play.

Lew Cook, an assistant coach at Notre Dame High School where Shelvin played, told The Advocate that he expects Shelvin to take an “academic redshirt” this fall, meaning he’ll be eligible to practice, but not to appear in games:

“It would have been a stretch to have him to play this year with not having the summer (with the team),” Cook said. “Looks like he’ll be there and have a year to get things straight.”

According to the 247Sports composite, Shelvin was the No. 4 defensive tackle in the class of 2017 and the No. 1 overall recruit from the state of Louisiana.
