LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis has been given a one-year contract extension. In a move first reported by Ross Dellenger of the Advocate (Baton Rouge, La.), Chavis’ salary will be $1.3 million in 2015, the same as it is this year. Chavis’ contract was set to expire on Dec. 31, 2014. According to a letter obtained by the Advocate, Chavis was given his extension in January 2013.
Since Chavis came to Baton Rouge in 2009, LSU has consistently had one of the best defenses in the nation. They ranked 26th in total defense in 2009, Chavis’ first season, but have been in the top 15 in each season since.
The $1.3 million salary makes Chavis one of the handful of highest-paid assistant coaches in the nation. Per USA TODAY’s database of coach salaries, Chavis had the third-highest salary in the country among assistants last season at $1.1 million. LSU could be looking at staff turnover next season, as five other assistants have contracts set to expire in March 2015. Dellenger reported that those contracts have automatic renewals unless the school terminates the deals.
