Officially named as LSU’s head coach, Ed Orgeron has a number of items on the proverbial agenda as he delves into the inner-workings of the position.

Perhaps the most-pressing need is finding a dynamic offensive coordinator. In his introductory press conference, Orgeron mentioned the desire for hiring an offensive mind rooted in the spread:

One candidate potentially in line for the position is Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin. In fact, LSU is trying to ensure that Kiffin will come to Baton Rouge with a handsome sum of money:

Kiffin and Orgeron have a longstanding history with one another. Both worked at USC during the Pete Carroll dynasty. Orgeron also coached under Kiffin when he was the head coach at Southern Cal.

As such, it isn’t surprising to see Orgeron target Kiffin. However, there are a few wildcards in this scenario.

For one, Kiffin expects to garner interest from other programs as a potential head coach. One would think he’d opt for a head coaching position over being an offensive coordinator. Oregon is said to be interested in his services.

Secondly, he could draw interest from the NFL as a coordinator.

Ultimately, landing Kiffin would be a major boon for LSU. Kiffin has proven to be very effective as a play-caller, and also as a developer of talent. There’s an attractiveness from a scheme standpoint. Not only is Kiffin comfortable with a power-running attack, but he also utilizes spread elements.

Having the ability to be diverse and multiple is significant — especially when going up against sophisticated SEC defenses.
