Rising star Derek Stingley Jr. is gaining fans seemingly by the day as he looks to be a key player again on the LSU defense. New SEC Network analyst Roman Harper already has high praise for the cornerback.
“Not only is he the top defensive player in the SEC, but I think all of the nation,” Harper said. “… I love his game, I love his attitude, I love everything that he does. I have not seen a defensive back come into college and dominate since another guy at LSU, Patrick Peterson many years ago. This guy’s got all the tools. He’s got ball skills, he can return game. I love this guy. He’ll be playing on Sundays as soon as he can.”
Stingley, a Baton Rouge native, is described as arguably the most impactful true freshmen in LSU history and the most decorated rookie in the history of the program. He earned consensus All-America honors in 2019, led the SEC and was fifth nationally with 6 interceptions
Stingley led the league and ranked No. 2 in the nation with 21 passes defended with 21. He was also the unanimous SEC Newcomer of the Year by the Associated Press and first-team All-SEC from the AP.
