Another name has surfaced in LSU’s search for a defensive coordinator, and its one that SEC fans are familiar with. Les Miles is considering Ron Zook, former head coach at Florida and Illinois, according to a report from CoachingSearch.com. Zook is an assistant for the Green Bay Packers, who are preparing to face the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL playoffs.

Zook spent three years at Florida, taking over when Steve Spurrier resigned to coach in the NFL. Zook went 23-14 in his tenure at Florida and was fired midway through the 2004 season. While Zook failed to meet Florida’s lofty standards, he was a strong recruiter in his time there, as many players on the 2006 championship team were Zook recruits.

He landed on his feet shortly thereafter, taking over a down Illinois program in 2005. He turned the program around and won nine games in 2007, leading the Illini to the Rose Bowl, but couldn’t sustain that kind of success. Zook lasted seven years at Illinois, compiling a 34-51 record.

After three years away from coaching, Zook took a role with the Packers this season as a special teams assistant. Zook has been a defensive coordinator several other times throughout his career: at Cincinnati and Kansas in the early-1980s, at Florida from 1991-93 and for the New Orleans Saints from 2000-01.
