Tim Brando blasts LSU for its treatment of Dale Brown in ongoing court debate
Tim Brando has made it clear which side he’s on in the ongoing basketball court debate at LSU.
LSU’s Board of Supervisors is considering a motion to add Sue Gunter’s name to Dale Brown Court after it was named after Brown last year. If the move passes, the court will be renamed “Brown-Gunter Court.”
Gunter was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2000, and completed her career among the leaders in several NCAA coaching categories: seasons coached (No. 1 – 40); games coached (No. 3 – 1,016); wins (No. 3 – 708); and 20-win seasons (No. 4 – 22).
The Tigers won 4 SEC titles under Brown and only Adolph Rupp and Joe B. Hall at Kentucky won more SEC titles. His 448-301 record with 238 wins in regular season SEC play, put him second behind only Rupp in wins in the league. He was only the third SEC coach to coach 25 years as a head coach in the league.
Brando followed ESPN’s Dick Vitale, who previously called the proposed move “absurd,” and was triggered by “ugly politics.” Brando picked up the baton from there.
“How dare Louisiana and LSU do this to them,” Brando said on Crain & Company. “And this is so typical my state. Listen, I have great pride, as you know, of where I’m from, I love Louisiana. … I’m pissed off and it’s time other people get pissed off. Shaq, I’ve texted you, where are you? Make the calls, do it now. We have other people in power who could do something about this and stop it.”
Brando later described it as political coercion.
