Washington has its quarterback for the future, grabbing LSU’s Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 overall pick Thursday night. That selection gives the Commanders a dynamic young QB to pair with new head coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury.

After the draft, the Commanders dropped the behind-the-scenes audio of the call to Daniels informing him of the selection. It included welcoming comments from owner Josh Harris and GM Adam Peters, but it was Quinn who offered up the most memorable comments.

He referred to Daniels as a “dog ass competitor” and said he is looking forward to having Daniels lead the offense:

“Congrats man, how awesome is this? I’ve known for a long time about the ballplayer, but over the last two months, I learned about the dude, the dedication. I think the Florida game spoke to your resilience, and that’s why you’re coming here, man,” said Quinn. “You’re a dog ass competitor, we’re going to kick a lot of ass together.”
Daniels was also a part of a historic run on quarterbacks in the first round with 6 QBs becoming first-round picks Thursday night. Caleb Williams was the first overall pick by the Chicago Bears while Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr. and JJ McCarthy also became top-10 picks.

Rookie of the Year outlook?

Anytime a young QB enters the league, he becomes an interesting player to watch in regard to the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year award. ESPN Bet dropped some early odds shortly after the first round, and Daniels checks in at +800 to win the honor.

Those odds have Daniels tied with McCarthy for 3rd on the overall odds while Williams (+200) leads the way with Marvin Harrison Jr. at +600. For what it’s worth, Daniels’ former LSU teammates and rookie wide receivers Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. check in at +1000 and +2200, respectively.
