Miami commit Malachi Toney is leaving the Hurricanes’ 2025 class and reopening his recruitment, according to multiple reports.
The Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage product had been verbally committed to The U for over a year, dating back to last August. He reclassified from the 2026 class to the 2025 class last month, and told On3’s Hayes Fawcett on Thursday that he’s focusing on Alabama, Florida State, and Oregon going forward.
Toney ranks as the No. 25 receiver in the class and the No. 34 recruit from the state of Florida. He’s a 4-star in the industry-generated 247 Composite and the No. 215 overall recruit in the 2025 class.
His departure drops the Canes’ class to 21 known recruits. It’s a top-20 class, but it is lean on pass-catchers. The lone remaining receiver who is publicly committed to Miami is Phenix City (Ala.) Central’s Daylyn Upshaw — a player Auburn is reportedly starting to focus more and more on.
The Canes could use reinforcements here, particularly if Upshaw starts to waver. It’s not dire; Isaiah Horton has emerged this season in his redshirt sophomore year. And Miami signed a pair of top-100 receivers in the 2024 class in Joshisa Trader and Ny Carr. But Xavier Restrepo and Jacolby George are both seniors.
Mario Cristobal has stacked excellent recruiting classes on top of each other since arriving in Coral Gables, so there’s not really any reason to panic at this point. And those efforts are showing on the field, with Miami off to a 5-0 start to the season and looking like the frontrunner in the ACC. The Canes are on the road in Week 6, facing Cal on Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
