Miami fans saw an awful scene play out during the Hurricanes’ appearance in the Cheez-It Bowl against Oklahoma State.

During the 2nd quarter, with the Canes trailing 21-7, quarterback D’Eriq King suffered an apparent injury to his right knee while running the football. As you can see from the video, it was a non-contact injury, with the knee of King appearing to buckle while he was trying to avoid a defender.

ESPN cameras caught King being helped to the locker room, unable to put much weight on his injured leg.

This has major ramifications for the Hurricanes beyond the Cheez-It Bowl. Just 3 days prior, King had announced that he would return for a 6th season of eligibility, taking advantage of the “bonus” year granted to student-athletes this season. His return, after a solid 2020, was expected to give the Canes a boost toward a College Football Playoff bid starting with their season opener against Alabama, but that appears to be in doubt.

We will have to wait to hear about the extent of the injury to King from Miami coach Manny Diaz after the game. For now, things don’t look favorable.
