De’Veon Smith, a former Michigan running back, was cut from a USFL team recently in a bizarre situation.

Smith shared in a video that circulated Monday on social media that he was cut from the team for choosing to eat pizza instead of chicken salad.

The video was part of a documentary series released on Saturday to promote the league called “United By Football: A Season in the USFL,” which chronicled the lead-up to the league’s return. Smith, a member of the Pittsburgh Maulers, spoke in the documentary with team personnel.

Maulers coach Kirby Wilson sits Smith down, explains the situation, and briefly listens to Smith’s reaction, then leaves the room. Smith’s point was that he didn’t say anything disrespectful, only that he preferred pizza over chicken salad.

“He crossed the line, so we had to deal with it,” Wilson said in the clip. “Any disrespect of football or members of staff, USFL, etc. will not be tolerated.”

The coach continued, “Someone’s hurt feelings are a distant second to the greater good of the team. And we’ve moved on and turned that page, and I’m happy we did it,” he said.
