Dallas had so much fun with its 2016 fourth-round pick this past season that it could be interested in taking a flyer on another Mississippi State stud in April’s NFL draft.

According to The Star-Telegram, the Cowboys — who were eliminated from the playoffs in the NFC divisional round but won 13 games during the regular season under rookie quarterback Dak Prescott’s direction — are targeting former Bulldogs star wide receiver Fred Ross.

They’ve already met at Senior Bowl practice. Twice.

“Hopefully they pick me. It’d be nice to play in Texas,” said Ross, who played high school football in Tyler, Tex. “But, on draft day, you never know.”

Drafting Ross would make a ton of sense for the Cowboys, who are set with Prescott as their franchise quarterback but will need to continue building the offense around him to fit his strengths in order for him to continue making the appropriate steps in his development.

Plus, the organization is likely in the market for pass-catchers this offseason with both Terrance Williams and Brice Butler becoming unrestricted free agents.

As a junior in 2015, Ross finished with a career-high 88 receptions for 1,007 yards (also a best) and five touchdowns. The dynamic duo also hooked up for another five scores when Ross was a sophomore.

This past season, Ross continued to be a force in the SEC with Nick Fitzgerald under center, collecting 72 catches for 917 yards as he found the end zone 12 times (t-1st in the conference). He now owns the school record in career yards (2,528), receptions (199), 100-yard games (nine) and came two scores short of tying all-time touchdown record (22).

“I’m just a playmaker, man,” Ross said. “I’ll do anything to help my team win. I’ll go across the middle. I can catch the bubble screen and take it for six. I can go down the field. I can do it all.”

CBS Sports currently lists Ross as the No. 32 receiver in the 2017 draft and a potential seventh-round selection. But the Cowboys found out last year that picking up an underrated offensive player from MSU can have its benefits.

Prescott has given his seal of approval for his former (and hopefully, future) teammate.

“He just told me, man, go hard out there,” Ross said. “Don’t worry about anything and do the best you can do. Everything you do is being evaluated, so do it as hard as you can and do it as professional as you can.”
