Former DC Todd Grantham thanks Mississippi State for great year in heartfelt note
Mississippi State is on the hunt for a new defensive coordinator after news broke on Wednesday that Todd Grantham was following coach Dan Mullen to Florida.
In his one year in Starkville, Grantham oversaw a huge defensive improvement for the Bulldogs and will now try to do the same with the Gators.
But, before he gets started in Gainesville, Grantham took some time out of his day to write a classy goodbye note to Mississippi State fans, which he posted on Twitter:
— Todd Grantham (@CoachTGrantham) November 30, 2017
Mullen also brought a couple of other assistants with him to Gainesville, so new Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead will have a few spots to fill.
It’ll be hard for Moorhead to find a defensive coordinator who can continue Grantham’s positive momentum, but the Bulldogs have plenty of talented athletes on that side of the ball, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see them continue having success in 2018.
Ugh we’ve had such awful luck with DC’s in the past… I don’t mind Mullen moving on but taking Grantham hurts. Just when our defense seems to have finally found its footing they’re getting the rug pulled from under their feet.
Cohen and Moorhead got it under control. No way they drop the ball now. We’re straight.
We aren’t going to hire another Sirmon. Our D isn’t going any where.
So… You’re talking Natty?
We aren’t talking the death penalty FOR SURE.
Soooooo… You’re talking Natty?
Wasn’t that Freeze’s line? Yeah.
I’m waiting for someone to stop dodging my question.
Sooooooooooooooooo… You’re talking Natty?
We aren’t delusional land sharts. What comment has any mention of a Nat’l C’ship? Troll on, buddy. I would imagine the trolling slows down after that hammer blow tomorrow morning.
The comment “Cohen and Moorhead got it under control. No way they drop the ball now. We’re straight.” is a statement that I’m assuming means winning the National Championship. Isn’t that the goal of every team? Are you people shooting for just a winning season or are you shooting for an NC? Again, you’re diverting the conversation to about Ole Miss. FORGET ABOUT OLE MISS FOR A SECOND and answer the question, you lard-eatin’ critter.
Report: Leo Lewis told NCAA COI that Mississippi State paid him $10,000 to sign – maybe you are talking death penalty!~
No team from Mississippi is talking about a Natty unless it is a Natty ICE, 12 pk.
So many cleos hereabouts. Peoply in MS drink Natty light, get it straight.
Grantham is pure class.
You might be the only one to think that.
So much for his commitment to stop the constant DC changes when he took the job. One year and he’s already gone.
Are you actually surprised he left?
Nope we’re not. We know what Mullen is as a head coach. You’re about to find out. I give it 3 years…. and that’s generous.
3 years till he wins an sec championship or 3 years till he’s gone?
Actually I wasn’t. I was hoping he would stay and end the constant DC changes. We always have the toughest time keeping good coaches in general, especially in that spot.
It’s very rare for a coordinator to not follow his head coach when asked unless it’s to become a head coach. But you can still bring in a good DC. I do wish state the best of luck with the new coach.
I hope we’ll be okay. Hopefully we don’t lose too many recruits. We already lost one and that was just from Mullen leaving. With Todd also leaving, I don’t even know at this point.
But I do wish Florida the best (except for against us next year of course lol) and I’ll be rooting for you guys to beat FSU every year.
This is the one that might hurt some recruiting, then, we’ve often been able to bring in good defensive recruits, but still.
Grantham wanted the head coaching position. That’s why he didn’t answer when Mullen first offered. Had Mississippi State hired someone who was already a head coach somewhere, Grantham may have stayed. When they hired another assistant coach from another school, there was no way he would stay.
Not shocked at all, State’s hands were tied on this one. I don’t think you could pass on Moorhead and promote Grantham, which is all he was waiting for before he made the decision to follow Mullen. Hate to lose him, but we brought in a better head coach prospect IMO.
If we get the DC we want, I think most fans will forget Grantham’s name. But I think that’s a pretty big “if.”
Unless State gets Nick Saban, you can go ahead and add whoever y’all get to the long list of DC names no one remembers. We’re talking MS State here. What do you really expect out of your program no matter who the Hell y’all hire? I would say “nothing” but I’ll let history have the floor on that one. Yep, it says nothing too, so I guess you’re screwed. Get used to it, Retardo.
Yeah, and ole miss is sooooo much better! Geez, Just get ready to be drilled tomorrow. It’s fans like you that are going to make it so sweet to see them get hammered and deservedly so.
I never said they were. Because you’re a simpleton you automatically think I’m comparing State to Ole Miss. Ole Miss a dumpster fire and they suck. I’ll say that because it’s a FACT. Want to know what else is a fact? State really sucks! You people argue like children. Can’t even stick to the point of the conversation. Instead of changing the subject to Ole Miss, why don’t you use logical points and prove me wrong about MS State?
Pretty nice statement about the atmosphere in Starkville and Grantham seems to have genuinely enjoyed his stay. Lot of humble-brag in the second half of the statement, though. Sorry to see him go. He was a good defensive secondary away from taking a bad defense and making them great. I would echo his sentiment that the players deserve a ton of credit for busting their humps to make his system go.
