Former Mississippi State QB Nick Fitzgerald did not make a 53-man active NFL roster, which does not come as a surprise since he was dealing with a hamstring injury during training camp. Still, his chances of playing on Sundays aren’t over. Fitzgerald will be on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ practice squad to start the 2019 season.
Greg Auman of The Athletic speculates that Fitzgerald will be developed for a “hybrid” role. Ahead of the NFL Draft, the 6-5, 226-pound quarterback was asked by some teams to also work out as a tight end.
At Mississippi State, Fitzgerald logged a 54.2 completion percentage in four seasons, completing 511 of 942 passes for 6,207 yards (6.6 yards per attempt) and 55 touchdowns to 30 interceptions. He also officially carried the ball 601 times for 3,607 yards (six yards per carry), though sacks are included in a quarterback’s net rushing statistics.
Bucs are signing rookie QB Nick Fitzgerald to their practice squad today. Former Mississippi State star missed all of training camp and preseason with a hamstring but will be able to start practicing Tuesday.
