It’s common when head coaches move locations for them to bring assistants from their former staff with them. New Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach will be adding at least one member of his Washington State staff to Mississippi State’s program in 2020.

Steve Spurrier shared at the Polynesian Bowl in Hawaii on Monday that his son, Steve Spurrier Jr., will be following Leach to Mississippi State according to 247Sports. Spurrier Jr. coached the outside wide receivers at Washington State under Leach the last two years.

It’s unclear at this time what role Spurrier Jr. will hold in Starkville.

Prior to joining Leach’s staff in 2018, Spurrier Jr. served as the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach at Western Kentucky in 2017. During the 2016 season, Spurrier Jr. was on Oklahoma’s coaching staff under Bob Stoops. He was the Sooners recruiting and offensive specialist under then offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.

Spurrier Jr.’s name alone gives him notoriety in the college football world — his father won the Heisman Trophy and then a national championship as a coach at Florida — but his experience under some impressive coaching names speaks for itself as well.

That will continue for at least one more season under Leach at Mississippi State.
