Mississippi State held a scrimmage on Saturday as the Bulldogs continue to move toward the season and narrow their quarterback competition.

Mike Leach told reporters that K.J. Costello was impressive today during the scrimmage, and he said Will Rogers did an “admirable job.”

“I thought those two had a good scrimmage.”

On K.J. Costello: “He’s the same guy every snap. He’s not a guy who gets rattled. I think that creates stability within the offense.”

Last week, Leach said that Costello, Garrett Shrader and Will Rogers were still getting the vast majority of reps at this point in camp.

“We’re doing the same thing currently,” Leach said last week. “I think that KJ is ahead, but we’re trying to see as much as we can out of Shrader and Will. We’re going to have to pare that down, too.”

Overall, Leach said the scrimmage this week was better than he thought it would be. “Very productive,” he said, and even said that today’s scrimmage was the best practice Mississippi State has had since training camp opened three weeks ago. Given the news that Tennessee missed 44 players from practice on Saturday, Leach was asked if Mississippi State has been able to conduct practices as normal amid the pandemic.

“Knock on wood, we have.”
