Here are some quick thoughts on Mississippi State’s 45-20 win over Louisiana Tech on Saturday.

What it means: Louisiana Tech, led by former Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel, is a decent football team. However, Mississippi State seized the opportunity to exert dominance using its superior offense, defense, and special teams.

What I liked: Dak Prescott not only played well on his own but coordinated well with the weapons around him. De’Runnya Wilson and Malik Dear had a huge impact on the offense today, not only making receptions but extending plays after the reception. They had a combined 155 receiving yards.

What I didn’t like: Dan Mullen perfectly encapsulated what I didn’t like during his comments just before he went into the locker room at halftime. “I’m disappointed in our slow start, both offensively and defensively,” he said. Mississippi State struggled to move the chains early and allowed Driskel to throw for some great results. In fact, on LA Tech’s first drive not a single run play was called. Driskel led his Bulldogs down the field with his arm for a touchdown. Fortunately, the Mississippi State defense toughened up as the game went on, forcing LA Tech to punt or settle for field goals.

Who’s the man: Prescott showed his experience and athleticism today. He finished 30 of 43 for 347 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also ran for 34 yards and a rushing TD.

Key play: With less than two minutes left in the 2nd quarter, Louisiana Tech was set to punt backed up in its own territory. However, Mississippi State’s Donald Gray blocked the punt, which was recovered by Brandon Bryant on the 2-yard line. This huge special teams play not only set up a 2-yard rushing touchdown for Prescott, but it also jolted the Mississippi State team completely awake for the rest of the afternoon.

What’s next: Mississippi State welcomes Kentucky into Starkville next week. Kentucky is a different team from previous years, tougher and with more talent, but the Wildcats still struggle to overcome their opponents.
