Mississippi State announced Wednesday that defensive coordinator Peter Sirmon had been replaced by former Louisville defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, and three-star Oakland (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) product Kaleb Oliver was among those surprised by the news.

Oliver, a three-star linebacker on 247Sports Composite and a four-star safety on Rivals, hasn’t decommitted, but says he will re-open his recruitment and consider his options.

“The news really took me by surprise,” Oliver told Rivals’ Woody Womack. “Coach Sirmon has been my recruiter and one of the main reasons I committed originally. I still love the fans and I’m still committed but with him gone I’m going to re-open my recruitment and hear what other coaches have to say. I’m supposed to take my official visit to Mississippi State Jan. 20 but I’ll probably take some other visits too.”

While Oliver is surprised by today’s news, fans shouldn’t be surprised if it ironically comes down to Mississippi State-Louisville battle for his services. Oliver actually named Louisville his leader back on April 17 before he committed to Mississippi State on June 22. It’s clear that he is familiar with the two coordinators who have now switched jobs.

Oliver, who measures 6-foot-3, 205 pounds, has a total of eight offers, including South Carolina and Vanderbilt. His highlights can be viewed below.
