The No. 12 Liberty Flames upset No. 5 Mississippi State 80-76 Friday night in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament.

It was a very close game throughout, but the Flames went on a 10-0 run late in the second half that propelled them to victory. It certainly didn’t help that Quinndary Weatherspoon and Lamar Peters got into foul trouble with about five minutes remaining in the second half either. The bottom line is MSU just collapsed late, and it cost the Bulldogs the game.

Weatherspoon led Mississippi State with 26 points, while Peters added 21. Robert Woodard also added 13 points off the bench.

Liberty’s Caleb Homesley is the player of the game, as he torched the Bulldogs with 30 points in the upset. He shot 5-of-11 from three-point range.

This was a massive shot by Homesley to give the Flames the lead:

Liberty advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament to face the winner of Virginia Tech-Saint Louis. The game will be played on Sunday with the tipoff time TBA.
